Batman: No Man's Land

Last week a friend informs me that he saw a legitimate comic book store somewhere in downtown St. Catharine's. With giddiness we skip down the sidewalk and find our sanctuary of nerdom. With seperate objectives in mind, we split up and begin the hunt. Mon ami searches for Alan Moore's "The Killing Joke", while I scan the shelves for a different story of the Batman universe. It came to my understanding that the sequel to Batman: Arkham Asylum will be based much on this series. I wanted to know why. As I read It becomes quite apparent that this series is MADE for a sandbox game.

An earthquake of the same force that hit Haiti brings Gotham city to it's knees. hundreds are killed, millions evacuate, thousands remain. Billionaire Bruce Wayne tries to convince congress to send immediate aid, but the United State's government sees that it's better to just quarantine the city like a infected limb being amputated. All the bridges are severed, the rivers are mined, and the airspace is restricted. For those who could or would not leave Gotham, are placed in a pretty grim situation. No electricity, no running water, no humanitarian aid. But the worst is yet to come. Amadeus Arkham's Asylum is no longer the secure building it was and all its patients are set loose on the crumbled city. With the GCPD crippled, each villain seizes control of a section of the city and exerts their power over the poor citizens:

"Two-Face is operating from the downtown courthouse. Killer Croc is a nomad, fighting whomever he finds... Ivy seems to have taken up in Robinson Park... The Joker's Whereabouts are currently unknown." (27-28)

What makes this story so gripping is that it has allowed every bad guy, every villain, to have free reign of the city with almost no opposition. It broke the classic Batman convention of one-at-a-time and put Gotham's hero against everyone who's ever wanted him dead. I look forward to continuing this series and see the Dark Knight take on everyone. A great read that takes a good deal of restraint to put down.

  2. I read this comics a couple years ago, in my opinion one of the best batman stories of all time. It shows his commitment to his city and how he really cares about its people. Its definatly a character defining story-line for him. I wont ruin it for you but the joker batman showdown is one to be remembered
